Japan to launch CBDC pilot program for issuance of digital Yen

Financial institution of Japan director Uchida Shinichi mentioned that the apex financial institution would launch a central financial institution digital forex (CBDC) pilot program to check the usage of digital yen from April.

The Financial institution of Japan launched the Proof of Idea (PoC) part of its CBDC experiment in April 2021. The PoC was designed to examine the technical feasibility and processing efficiency of the CBDC system.

In view of enhancing the findings of the PoC part, Uchida Schinichi introduced on Feb. 17 that the BOJ would launch the pilot program beginning in April 2023.

The 2-fold goal of the pilot program is: first, to check the technical feasibility not totally lined by the PoCs, and second, to interact the personal sector within the CBDC experiment.

Uchida mentioned that the BOJ will conduct simulated transactions with personal monetary establishments in a check setting.

 “…partaking in extremely clear communication with the personal sector are crucial steps to take for adoption in society, Uchida added.

Uchida defined that the pilot program will assist the BOJ be prepared in case the federal government decides to challenge a digital Yen.
